UMI FAQs
What makes UMI Stone different from other stone suppliers?
UMI Stone is one of the largest importers and distributors of premium stone in the United States, with locations throughout the East Coast. We take a hands-on approach to sourcing our materials. Our team partners with exclusive quarries worldwide, and our field representatives physically inspect every slab before it arrives in our warehouses. This guarantees the quality, authenticity, and consistency of every material we offer.
Our collection features quartzite, marble, granite, and travertine, as well as engineered surfaces such as Pompeii Quartz, Vicostone, and Infinity Porcelain. UMI Stone is directly involved in the creation of these premium products. To inspire homeowners, designers, and fabricators, we offer inspiration galleries, design events, and showroom experiences that help bring their projects to life. Additionally, we are known for our operational excellence, providing dependable service and streamlined logistics to ensure a simple and reliable process.
Can I visit a UMI showroom if I’m not a fabricator?
Yes. Our showrooms are open to homeowners, interior designers, architects, and industry professionals. While UMI only sells directly to fabricators, anyone is welcome to browse slabs, explore materials, and place a specific slab on hold for their project. Your fabricator will receive your selections and can then purchase the slab you’ve selected, ensuring you receive the exact stone you fell in love with.
If you don’t already have a stone fabricator to purchase, cut, and install your slabs, you can find one through the dealer locator on our website.
Do I need an appointment to visit the showroom?
No. Appointments are recommended so our team can dedicate time to walk you through the slabs, answer questions, and guide your search. However, walk-ins are always welcome. If you are a designer or homeowner visiting with a client or a fabricator, consider calling your local UMI Stone for an appointment.
What should I bring to my showroom visit?
We suggest bringing measurements or blueprints of your project, along with inspiration images, design boards, or cabinet and paint samples. If possible, bring your designer or fabricator to help streamline the process. These details allow our team to better guide you toward the best material options for your space.
Can I buy stone directly from UMI?
UMI is a distributor and therefore sells slabs to fabricators, not directly to homeowners. This ensures your material is delivered, cut, finished, and installed by a licensed professional. If you’re a homeowner or designer, you can select your slab at UMI, and we will coordinate with your chosen fabricator to complete the purchase.
How do I choose the right stone for my project?
The best choice depends on your design vision and how you plan to use the surface. Our showroom staff can help guide you through the benefits of each option, show real applications, and recommend the best fit for your project.
Can I take home samples?
Yes, we provide samples of Pompeii Quartz, Forum Quartz, Vicostone Quartz, and Infinity Porcelain. Natural stone samples, such as marble and quartzite, are limited since each slab is unique. You can order free quartz samples by visiting our specific quartz brand pages. UMI provides free samples and shipping for up to four samples per order.
Do slabs vary from the photos on your website?
Yes. Natural stone is one of a kind, and no two slabs are exactly alike. The images on umistone.com are representative of the color, veining, and movement you can expect, but we always recommend visiting a showroom to select slabs in person. Engineered surfaces like Pompeii Quartz, Vicostone Quartz, and Infinity Porcelain are more consistent in appearance.
Can UMI Stone help me find a fabricator?
Yes. Our website features a Dealer Locator tool where you can search for certified fabricators and dealers in your area.
Where can I find pricing for UMI slabs?
UMI provides slabs to fabricators, and pricing is available through them. Your fabricator will give you a full project estimate, including the cost of the stone, fabrication, delivery, and installation. We recommend selecting your slab at UMI first, then confirming pricing with your fabricator. Or, your fabricator can give you an idea of what stone will fit within your specific budget so that you can focus on those when you visit a UMI showroom to make your selections.
Material FAQs
What is the difference between natural stone and engineered stone?
Natural stone, such as quartzite, marble, granite, and travertine, is quarried directly from the earth, with each slab being one of a kind. Engineered stone, like Pompeii Quartz, Vicostone Quartz, and Infinity Porcelain, is man-made using natural minerals, resins, and advanced technology to create consistent patterns and colors.
Which stone materials are best for kitchen countertops?
Quartzite and granite are durable and heat-resistant, making them excellent choices for kitchens. Quartz is also popular for its low maintenance, while marble can be used if you’re comfortable with its natural patina over time. The best material really depends on your specific project, aesthetic, and lifestyle. Visit a UMI showroom so we can help you choose the best material for your project.
Is marble a good choice for bathrooms?
Yes. Marble’s elegant veining and soft tones make it ideal for vanities, showers, and feature walls. Since it is more porous, sealing and proper care are recommended to preserve its beauty. Learn about the qualities of marble by visiting our MARBLE page.
What stone can I use outdoors?
Quartzite, granite, and Infinity Porcelain are excellent choices for outdoor kitchens, patios, and exterior cladding. Keep in mind that some quartzites contain resin, which can be affected by UV exposure, so always check with a UMI representative before using them outside.
Do natural stone slabs vary in appearance?
Yes. Every natural stone slab is unique, with variations in veining, color, and movement. We recommend visiting a UMI showroom to personally select the slabs for your project.
How quickly can I get slabs delivered ?
If your fabricator is ready to place the order and the slabs you need are in stock, delivery to the fabricator can often be arranged within a few business days.
Does quartz or porcelain need sealing?
No. Quartz and Infinity Porcelain are non-porous materials that do not require sealing. Natural stones such as quartzite, marble, granite, and travertine benefit from periodic sealing for protection.
How do I maintain and clean natural stone surfaces?
Use mild soap and warm water for daily cleaning. Avoid acidic or abrasive cleaners, especially on softer stones like marble and travertine. Sealing your stone periodically adds extra protection against stains and etching.
Can I see full slabs before choosing?
Yes. UMI showrooms feature full slab displays so homeowners and designers can view the stone in person, rather than relying on small samples or website images. This helps you appreciate the true scale, movement, and veining of the material.
Do UMI products offer warranties?
Pompeii Quartz, Vicostone Quartz, Forum Quartz, and Infinity Porcelain surfaces include manufacturer warranties. Natural stone warranties depend on your fabricator, since no two slabs are alike. Please review the warranty information provided for each brand on our website or ask our team for details.
